(8) True calling upon the name of God is the testimony of true faith, and true faith of true vocation or calling, and true calling of true election.

People's New Testament 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. See Joe 2:32. To call upon the name of the Lord implies,

(1) That the true God (Jehovah, in the Hebrew quotation) shall be approached in worship, and

(2) that there shall be something more than saying, Lord, Lord, etc. (Mt 7:21,22). The language, wherever used, implies coming to the Lord and calling on him in his appointed way. Compare Ac 22:16 2:21 Ge 12:8.

This promise of Joel, since it says whosoever, is not limited to the Jewish race.

JL 2:32 It will certainly happen that whoever calls on the name of YeHoWaH will escape. 64 [Acts 2:17-21] For a remnant in Mount Zion 65 [Revelation 14:1] and Jerusalem will escape - just as YeHoWaH has declared – among all the survivors whom YeHoWaH is calling. 66

During the presence of the great and awesome Day of YeHoWaH the sun will darken and the moon will turn blood-red: Or, DAR: The sun shall be changed to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah come; YLT: The sun is turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, Before the coming of the day of Jehovah, The great and the fearful. The Hebrew for “coming” [or, arrival, presence] is BOW’ [Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance #935]. The LXX Greek is ELTHEIN a synonym for PAROUSIA in Mark 13 and Luke 21.

It will certainly happen that whoever calls on the name of YeHoWaH will escape: Or, DAR: And it shall be that whosoever shall call upon the name of Jehovah shall be saved; YLT: And it hath come to pass, Every one who calleth in the name of Jehovah is delivered. The verse is quoted by Peter at Acts 2:21 and Paul at Romans 10:13. In both cases the Society for distributing the Hebrew Scriptures inserts the Hebrew YHWH for KYRIOU. Those upon whom Jehovah pours out His Pneuma must be identified by the use of the Divine Name, YHWH [Yehowah, Jehovah, Yahweh].

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

10:12-17 There is not one God to the Jews, more kind, and another to the Gentiles, who is less kind; the Lord is a Father to all men. The promise is the same to all, who call on the name of the Lord Jesus as the Son of God, as God manifest in the flesh. All believers thus call upon the Lord Jesus, and none else will do so humbly or sincerely. But how should any call on the Lord Jesus, the Divine Saviour, who had not heard of him? And what is the life of a Christian but a life of prayer? It shows that we feel our dependence on him, and are ready to give up ourselves to him, and have a believing expectation of our all from him. It was necessary that the gospel should be preached to the Gentiles. Somebody must show them what they are to believe. How welcome the gospel ought to be to those to whom it was preached! The gospel is given, not only to be known and believed, but to be obeyed. It is not a system of notions, but a rule of practice. The beginning, progress, and strength of faith is by hearing. But it is only hearing the word, as the word of God that will strengthen faith.

(u) God's judgments are for the destruction of the unbelievers, and to exhort the godly to call upon the name of God,

who will give them salvation.

(x) Meaning the Gentiles by this; Ro 10:13.

Wesley's Notes

2:32 Whosoever shall call - Who hearing the gospel repents and believes in Christ. Delivered - Either from those outward afflictions, or which is infinitely better from eternal miseries, which will swallow up the unbelieving world; and it will aggravate the ruin of those who perish, that they might have been saved on such easy terms. Is it then easy for a non - elect to repent and believe? May he not as easily pull the sun out of the firmament? In mount Zion - In the true church typified by Zion. Jerusalem - In mystical Jerusalem, the church and the city of the Messiah. Deliverance - Temporal and eternal. Shall call - To believe in Christ, and by him to wait for eternal life.

32. call on . name of . Lord-Hebrew, Jehovah. Applied to Jesus in Ro 10:13 (compare Ac 9:14; 1Co 1:2). Therefore, Jesus is Jehovah; and the phrase means, "Call on Messiah in His divine attributes."

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary

2:28-32 The promise began to be fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out, and it was continued in the converting grace and miraculous gifts conferred on both Jews and Gentiles. The judgments of God upon a sinful world, only go before the judgment of the world in the last day. Calling on God supposes knowledge of him, faith in him, desire toward him, dependence on him, and, as evidence of the sincerity of all this, conscientious obedience to him. Those only shall be delivered in the great day, who are now effectually called from sin to God, from self to Christ, from things below to things above.
