decided to kill Jesus (John 5:18) and were diligently seeking some means of
carrying out their plans; and, in that context, these words carry the weight of
John 10:17,18, where Jesus plainly said
they would not be able to murder him, but that he would lay down his own life
and take it up again. Jesus affirmed here that the Son is co-equal with God in the possession of life in
himself.
