31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If
you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." 33 They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never * yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free '?" 34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. 35 "The
slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever. 36 "So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 "I know that you are Abraham's descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.

In A.D.
93, the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus published his work Antiquities of the Jews. The extant copies of this work, which all derive from Christian
sources, even the recently-recovered Arabic version, contain two passages about
Jesus.
The one directly concerning Jesus has come to be known as the Testimonium
Flavianum. If genuine,
it is the earliest record of Jesus in Jewish sources, and as such is sometimes
cited as independent evidence for the historical existence of Jesus. However
it is the other passage, concerning James
the brother of Jesus which provides the most
interesting evidence from Josephus; this is because it is generally accepted by
scholars as authentic.

Love of the Trinity---Compare Living by the Sword
Did Jesus want his disciples to band together and violently
defend him? Peter thought so. He removed his sword and attacked one of the men
in the mob, cutting off his ear. Jesus’ response, though, must have stunned
Peter. Jesus miraculously healed the man’s ear and said to Peter: “Return your
sword to its place, for all those who take the sword will perish by the
sword.”—Matthew 26:52.
The lesson?
Arming oneself for defense is not only unscriptural but also foolish,
impractical. A proverb puts it this way:
“As for the one searching for bad, it
will come upon him.”—Proverbs 11:27.
for
all those who take the sword will perish by the sword.”—Matthew 26:52.

God’s Word Bible John 8-44

desire to do what your father wants you to do. The devil was a murderer from

Because
he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.

15 Jesus then said to those Jews who
believed in him, "If you remain in my word, you will truly be my
disciples,
and you
will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
They
answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved
to anyone.
16 How can you say, 'You will become
free'?"
15 [31] Those Jews who believed in him: a
rough editorial suture, since in John 8:37 they
are described as trying to kill Jesus.
16 [33] Have never been enslaved to anyone: since, historically, the Jews were enslaved almost continuously, this verse is probably Johannine irony, about slavery to sin.
17 [35] A slave . . . a son: an allusion to Ishmael and Isaac (Genesis 16; 21), or to the release of a slave after six years (Exodus 21:2; Deut 15:12).
18 [38] The Father: i.e., God. It is also possible, however, to understand the second part of the verse as a sarcastic reference to descent of the Jews from the devil (John 8:44), "You do what you have heard from [your] father."
19 [39] The works of Abraham: Abraham believed; cf Romans 4:11-17; James 2:21-23.
20 [48] Samaritan: therefore interested in magical powers; cf Acts 7:14-24.
21 [53] Are you greater than our father Abraham?: cf John 4:12.
22 [56] He saw it: this seems a reference to the birth of Isaac (Genesis 17:7; 21:6), the beginning of the fulfillment of promises about Abraham's seed.
