Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Freely ye have received, freely give - That is, they were not to sell their favors of healing, preaching, etc. They were not to make a money-making business of it, to bargain specifically to heal for so much, and to cast out devils for so much. This, however, neither then nor afterward precluded them from receiving a competent support. See Luke 10:7; 1 Corinthians 9:8-14; 1 Timothy 5:18.

Luke/10-7.Correct commentary coming soon to all verses that pertain to the subject of preachers should be paid money from the churches they preach at and what about those that are quest preacher at other Churches and why so many churches compete against each others.

Some verses to consider

(Matthew 10:10) or a food pouch for the trip, or two undergarments, or sandals or a staff; for the worker deserves his food.

(1 Corinthians 9:11) If we have sown spiritual things to YOU, is it something great if we shall reap things for the flesh from YOU?

(1 Corinthians 9:14) In this way, too, the Lord ordained for those proclaiming the good news to live by means of the good news.

(1 Timothy 5:18) For the scripture says: “You must not muzzle a bull when it threshes out the grain”; also: “The workman is worthy of his wages.”

The workman is worthy of his meat - This implies that they were to expect a proper supply for their needs from those who were benefited. They were not to make "bargain and sale" of the power of working miracles, but they were to expect competent support from preaching the gospel, and that not merely as a gift, but because they were "worthy" of it, and had a right to it.

Matthew-- 10 -8

                                                        Commentary

[8-11] The Twelve have received their own call and mission through God's gift, and the benefits they confer are likewise to be given freely. They are not to take with them money, provisions, or unnecessary clothing; their lodging and food will be provided by those who receive them.

[13] The greeting of peace is conceived of not merely as a salutation but as an effective word. If it finds no worthy recipient, it will return to the speaker.

[14] Shake the dust from your feet: this gesture indicates a complete disassociation from such unbelievers.

Verse 8  Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.

9 Do not take gold or silver or copper for your belts;

10 no sack for the journey, or a second tunic, or sandals, or walking stick. The laborer deserves his keep.

11 Whatever town or village you enter, look for a worthy person in it, and stay there until you leave.

12 As you enter a house, wish it peace.

13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; if not, let your peace return to you. 6
