ALPHA
These
are the names of the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet and are used
as a title three times in the book of Revelation. The additional occurrence of
this phrase in the King James rendering of Revelation
While
many commentators apply this title both to God and to Christ, a more careful
examination of its use restricts its application to Jehovah God. The first
verse of Revelation shows that the revelation was given originally by God and
through Jesus Christ, hence the one speaking (through an angelic representative)
at times is God himself, and at other times it is Christ Jesus. (Re 22:8) Thus
Revelation 1:8 (RS) says: “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord
God [“Jehovah God,” NW], who is and who was and who is to come, the
Almighty.” Although the preceding verse speaks of Christ Jesus, it is clear
that in verse 8 the application of the title is to “the Almighty” God. In this
regard Barnes’ Notes on the New Testament
(1974) observes: “It cannot be absolutely certain that the writer meant to
refer to the Lord Jesus specifically here . . .
There is no real incongruity in supposing, also, that the writer here meant to
refer to God as such.”
The
title occurs again at Revelation 21:6, and the following verse identifies the
speaker by saying: “Anyone conquering will inherit these things, and I shall be
his God and he will be my son.” Inasmuch as Jesus referred to those who are
joint heirs with him in his Kingdom as “brothers,” not “sons,” the speaker must
be Jesus’ heavenly Father, Jehovah God.—Mt 25:40; compare Heb
The
final occurrence of the title is at Revelation 22:13, which states: “I am the
Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” It is
evident that a number of persons are represented as speaking in this chapter of
Revelation; verses 8 and 9 show that the angel spoke to John, verse 16
obviously applies to Jesus, the first part of verse 17 is credited to “the
spirit and the bride,” and the one speaking in the latter part of verse 20 is
manifestly John himself. “The Alpha and the Omega” of verses 12-15, therefore,
may properly be identified as the same one who bears the title in the other two
occurrences: Jehovah God. The expression, “Look! I am
coming quickly,” in verse 12, does not require that these aforementioned verses
apply to Jesus, inasmuch as God also speaks of himself as “coming” to execute
judgment. (Compare Isa 26:21.) Malachi 3:1-6 speaks
of a joint coming for judgment on the part of Jehovah and his “messenger
of the covenant.”
The
title “the Alpha and the Omega” carries the same thought as “the first and the
last” and “the beginning and the end” when these terms are used with reference
to Jehovah. Before him there was no Almighty God, and there will be none after
him. He will bring to a successful conclusion the issue over Godship, forever vindicated as the one and only Almighty
God.—Compare Isa 44:6.—It 1pp 80-81
‘I Am the First, I
Am the Last’
Now
Jehovah warmly appeals to his covenant people: “Listen to
me, O Jacob, and you
A solemn
invitation is addressed to both Jews and non-Jews: “Be collected
together, all you people,
and hear. Who among them
has told these things? Jehovah
himself has loved him. He
will do what is his
delight upon
In
an inviting tone, Jehovah continues: “Come near to
me, you people. Hear this.
From the start I have
spoken in no place of
concealment at all. From
the time of its occurring
I have been there.” (Isaiah
48:16a) Predictions from Jehovah have not been given in secrecy
or made known only to a few initiates. Jehovah’s prophets were forthright
speakers on behalf of God. (Isaiah 61:1) They publicly declared the will of
God. For example, events connected with Cyrus were not new to God or unforeseen
by him. Some 200 years in advance, God openly foretold them through Isaiah.
In
the same way today, Jehovah is not secretive about his purposes. Millions of
people in hundreds of lands and islands of the sea proclaim from house to
house, on the streets, and wherever else they can the warning of the coming end
of this system of things and the good news of blessings to come under God’s
Kingdom. Truly, Jehovah is a God who communicates his purposes.—IP2 120-135

Questions From
Readers
● Revelation
Alpha is the first letter of the Greek
alphabet, and omega is the last; one is the beginning and the other the
end of the Greek alphabet. So the expressions “the Alpha and the Omega” and
“the first and the last” and “the beginning and the end” are parallel
expressions and mean the same thing. They are applied to Jehovah God. Isaiah
44:6 (AS) reads: “Thus saith Jehovah, the King
of Israel, and his Redeemer, Jehovah of hosts: I am the first, and I am the
last; and besides me there is no God.” Revelation 1:8 (NW) catches up
this thought in Isaiah and adds to it the point that he is coming: “‘I am the
Alpha and the Omega,’ says Jehovah God, ‘the One who is and who was and who is
coming, the Almighty.’”
So
just because the verse preceding Revelation 22:13 speaks of that “Alpha and
Omega” as coming does not necessarily mean it refers to Christ Jesus, whose
second coming is frequently mentioned. Revelation 1:8 shows Jehovah as coming,
and so Revelation 22:12 may do likewise. He comes representatively, through
Christ Jesus. Revelation 4:8 speaks of Jehovah as coming, and Revelation 21
shows his presence with humankind. “Look! the tent of
God is with humankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his
peoples. And God himself will be with them. . . . I am the Alpha and
the Omega, the beginning and the end. To anyone thirsting I will give from the
fountain of the water of life free. Anyone conquering will inherit these
things, and I shall be his God and he will be my son.” (Vss.
3, 6, 7) This reference is certainly to Jehovah God, for he is God to the
anointed body members of Christ and they are his spiritual sons. They are
Christ’s brothers, not sons, so the text is speaking of Jehovah, and it calls
him “the Alpha and the Omega”. So when the Alpha and Omega is mentioned again
in the very next chapter, why must the term suddenly shift to Christ Jesus
instead of Jehovah God? It does not.
Some
argue that it refers to Christ Jesus at Revelation
So we must
be reasonable. When we see an expression that is applied to Jehovah several
times in its unlimited sense, and then come across it again but not
specifically indicated as applying to Jehovah, we cannot become flighty and
switch the expression to Christ Jesus; and especially when we note that it is
applied elsewhere, not in its unlimited sense, but only with definite
limitation of meaning. Trinitarians try to capitalize on this expression to
show it was used indiscriminately for either God or Christ, and in this way
show God and Christ are the same. But logic and reason do not allow this, no
more than do many other texts in the Bible. W53 1/ 1 31

Explanatory Notes
Paragraphs
2&3&4 of the first article—in ALPHAandTheOMEGA.htm
Based
on what is revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures, the title “the Alpha and the
Omega” would certainly fit Jehovah God. At Isaiah 55:10, 11, for example, we
are told: “Just as the pouring rain descends, and the snow, from the heavens
and does not return to that place, unless it actually saturates the earth and
makes it produce and sprout, and seed is actually given to the sower and bread to the eater, so my word that goes forth
from my mouth will prove to be. It will not return to me without results, but
it will certainly do that in which I have delighted, and it will have certain
success in that for which I have sent it.”
How
forcefully this emphasizes that whatever Jehovah God expresses will be brought
to a successful finish! Water falling in the form of rain or snow eventually
filters down into the soil, there to combine with nutrients. In this way the
precipitation furnishes what is needed for plant growth. In the case of grain,
some of the seed may be set aside for sowing in the next season, and a far
larger portion may be ground into flour for making bread. Thus the ultimate
purpose of the precipitation is realized—seed is given to the sower and bread to the eater. Likewise,
whatever Jehovah God, as the Beginner, sets in motion by his word always is
brought to a successful end.
But does
the title “the Alpha and the Omega” apply exclusively to Jehovah God? To answer
this question, we must examine the context in which this designation appears.

1 My dear friends, don't believe everything you hear. Carefully weigh
and examine what people tell you. Not everyone who talks about God comes from
God. There are a lot of lying preachers loose in the world. 2 Here's how you test for the
genuine Spirit of God. Everyone who confesses openly his faith in Jesus
Christ--the Son of God, who came as an actual flesh-and-blood person--comes
from God and belongs to God. 3 And everyone who refuses to
confess faith in Jesus has nothing in common with God. This is the spirit of
antichrist that you heard was coming. Well, here it is, sooner than we thought!
