Topic: Antichrist

can mean either "against Christ" or "instead of Christ," or perhaps, combining the two, "one who, assuming the guise of Christ, opposes Christ" (Westcott). The word is found only in John's epistles, (a) of the many "antichrists" who are forerunners of the "Antichrists" himself, 1 John 2:18,22; 2 John 1:7; (b) of the evil power which already operates anticipatively of the "Antichrist,"
1 John 4:3.

What the Apostle says of him so closely resembles what he says of the first beast in Rev. 13, and what the Apostle Paul says of the Man of Sin in 2 Thess. 2, that the same person seems to be in view in all these passages, rather than the second beast in Rev. 13, the false prophet; for the latter supports the former in all his Antichristian assumptions.

Note: The term pseudochristos, "a false Christ," is to be distinguished from the above; it is found in Matt. 24:24; Mark 13:22. The false Christ does not deny the existence of Christ, he trades upon the expectation of His appearance, affirming that he is the Christ. The Antichrist denies the existence of the true God (Trench, Syn. XXX).

Who Are the Antichrists?

The answer to this question is so simple, although much speculation has been made of it in the past. As John said here (1 John 2:22), ‘This is the Antichrist: He who denies both the Father and the Son.’

Apparently, by the turn of the Second Century C.E., there were people in the Christian congregation (probably more Judaizers) who were denying that there ever was a Jesus, or possibly denying that he was the Chosen One of God. And as John said (at 1 John 2:23), ‘Whoever denies the Son [also denies] the Father.’

Such denial of Jesus amounted to an unforgivable sin against God’s Holy Breath, because it was God’s Breath that testified to just who Jesus was. So, this was a very serious matter. In fact, it was so serious that John told Christians not to even talk to such people – to treat them as though they were dead – because, what they were saying truly condemned them.

22 So, who’s a liar? Those who deny that Jesus is the Anointed One. This is the Antichrist: He who denies both the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son [also denies] the Father. But he who admits [to knowing] the Son also [admits to knowing] the Father.

Who is the liar ( 102) if not the person who denies Jesus is the Christ?

1 John 2:22-25 – How to Know Antichrists

1JN2:22 Who is the liar 102 if not the person who denies Jesus is the Christ? 103 The person who denies the Father and the Son is the antichrist. 104

Who is the liar: Or, MOF: who is the real liar; WMS: who is the notorious liar. Paraphrase of verses 22-25, “Who is the prevaricator if it is not the individual who disowns Jesus as the Messiah? The individual who disowns the Father and the Son is the antichrist. Every person who disowns the Son has no relationship with the Father. Every person acknowledging the Son also has a relationship with the Father. Stay with those truths you first heard and then you will abide in both the Father and the Son. The life everlasting is the promise He covenanted with us.” [NCMM Paraphrase]

The person who denies Jesus is the Christ: 1 John 4:3, “God is not the source of any ‘inspiration’ not confessing Jesus.” 2 John 7, “Many impostors left for the world. These are the impostors and antichrists: those who do not confess Jesus Christ came in the flesh.” The Gnostics were a sect that combined Egyptian, Greek, Jewish and Christian thought. They believe all matter and all flesh to be evil. Thus, it would be impossible for Jesus to have been manifest in the flesh unless it was as a phantasm or disembodied spirit.

God Has Spoken to Us Through His Son

Heb 1:1  In the past God spoke to our ancestors at many different times and in many different ways through the prophets.

Heb 1:2  In these last days he has spoken to us through his Son. God made his Son responsible for everything. His Son is the one through whom God made the universe.

Heb 1:3  His Son is the reflection of God's glory and the exact likeness of God's being. He holds everything together through his powerful words. After he had cleansed people from their sins, he received the highest position, the one next to the Father in heaven.

The Holy Trinity –Fits that Description

A lie is a statement that is untrue, when the falsity of the statement is known or suspected by the speaker. Depending on definitions, a lie can be a genuine falsehood or a selective truth, a lie by omission, or even the truth if the intention is to deceive or to cause an action not in the listener's interests. To lie is to tell a lie. A person who tells a lie, and especially a person who habitually tells lies, is a liar.

Lying is against the moral standards of many people and is specifically prohibited as a sin in many religions. Ethical traditions and philosopers are divided over whether a lie is ever allowable but are generally opposed - Plato said yes, whereas Aristotle, Saint Augustine and Kant said no.

Revelation 21-8 [Context]

But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

But to the fearful and unbelieving, [and sinners], and those who make themselves abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part [is] in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.

But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death."

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, they shall have their portion in the pool burning with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

For, ‘He was shown in the flesh, was called righteous in spirit, appeared to [God’s] messengers, was preached about among the nations, was believed in the world, and was taken up in glory.’

Definition: Antichrist means against or instead of Christ. The term applies to all who deny what the Bible says about Jesus Christ, all who oppose his Kingdom, and all who mistreat his followers. It also includes individuals, organizations, and nations that falsely claim to represent Christ or that improperly ascribe to themselves the role of Messiah.

Does the Bible refer to only one antichrist?

1 John 2:18: “Young children, it is the last hour, and, just as you have heard that antichrist is coming, even now there have come to be many antichrists; from which fact we gain the knowledge that it is the last hour.”

2 John 7: “Many deceivers have gone forth into the world, persons not confessing Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.” (Notice that the “many antichrists” of 1 John 2:18 are here referred to collectively as “the antichrist.”)

Is the coming of the antichrist reserved for some future time?

1 John 4:3: “Every inspired expression that does not confess Jesus does not originate with God. Furthermore, this is the antichrist’s inspired expression which you have heard was coming, and now it is already in the world.” (That was written near the end of the first century C.E.)

1 John 2:18: “Even now there have come to be many antichrists; from which fact we gain the knowledge that it is the last hour.” (By “last hour” John evidently meant the end of the apostolic period. The other apostles had died, and John himself was very old.)

Some of those identified as antichrist—

Persons who deny that Jesus is truly the Messiah

1 John 2:22: “Who is the liar if it is not the one that denies that Jesus is the Christ [or, Messiah, anointed one]? This is the antichrist.”

All who deny that Jesus is the unique Son of God

1 John 2:22: “This is the antichrist, the one that denies the Father and the Son.”

Compare John 10:36; Luke 9:35.

1 John 2:18, 19: “There have come to be many antichrists . . . They went out from us, but they were not of our sort.”

Those who oppose Christ’s true followers

John 15:20, 21: “If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you also . . . But they will do all these things against you on account of my name.”

Individuals and nations that oppose Christ as King or that themselves falsely claim the Messianic role

Ps. 2:2: “The kings of earth take their stand and high officials themselves have massed together as one against Jehovah and against his anointed one [Christ, or Messiah].”

See also Revelation 17:3, 12-14; 19:11-21.

Matt. 24:24: “False Christs and false prophets will arise and will give great signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, even the chosen ones.”
