Harper's Bible Dictionary (San Francisco: Harper and Row, 1985) describes "the antichrist" as follows:

Antichrist, the, the final opponent of Christ and thus of God. This designation is found only in the Letters of John. The author supposes that his audience has heard the term before (1 John 2:18), and he suggests that it now refers to individuals ('antichrists') whose religious influence is already a danger to the church (1 John 2:18-29; 4:1-6; 2 John 1:7-11). It is unclear whether such leaders, whose errors are both Christological and moral, are to be identified with Gnostics or with some other group.

Earlier, Jewish thinkers, amidst persecution by the Greeks (second century [b.c.]), believed that the blasphemous 'little horn' (Antiochus IV) would be vanquished by the sudden rule of 'the saints of the Most High' (Dan. 7). Soon thereafter it was believed that a coming Messiah would terminate persecution, whether it was inflicted by Greece or Rome. The hostile empire was often given the name Belial/Beliar (Heb., 'worthless one').

Early Christianity continued the practice of depicting the enemy as an individual or beast who would be defeated at the Messiah's (Christ's) return. The enemy is variously referred to as 'the lawless one' (2 Thess. 2:8), Belial (2 Cor. 6:15), and Gog and Magog (Rev. 20:8). A final attack upon the church is sometimes identified with the reappearance of the emperor Nero.

This may be the background for the expected 'antichrist,' which the author of 1 John redefines in religious terms. The church has continued to use this designation for its enemies in every age, both within and outside of its membership.

Who Are the Antichrists? http://www.2001translation.com/FIRST_JOHN.htm#_Who_Are_the_Antichrists?

The answer to this question is so simple, although much speculation has been made of it in the past. As John said here (1 John 2:22), ‘This is the Antichrist: He who denies both the Father and the Son.’

Apparently, by the turn of the Second Century C.E., there were people in the Christian congregation (probably more Judaizers) who were denying that there ever was a Jesus, or possibly denying that he was the Chosen One of God. And as John said (at 1 John 2:23), ‘Whoever denies the Son [also denies] the Father.’

Such denial of Jesus amounted to an unforgivable sin against God’s Holy Breath, because it was God’s Breath that testified to just who Jesus was. So, this was a very serious matter. In fact, it was so serious that John told Christians not to even talk to such people – to treat them as though they were dead – because, what they were saying truly condemned them.

This is the Antichrist: He who denies both the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son [also denies] the Father. But he who admits [to knowing] the Son also [admits to knowing] the Father.

Who is the liar 102 if not the person who denies Jesus is the Christ?

1 John 2:22-25 – How to Know Antichrists

1JN2:22 Who is the liar 102 if not the person who denies Jesus is the Christ? 103 The person who denies the Father and the Son is the antichrist. 104

102

Who is the liar: Or, MOF: who is the real liar; WMS: who is the notorious liar. Paraphrase of verses 22-25, “Who is the prevaricator if it is not the individual who disowns Jesus as the Messiah? The individual who disowns the Father and the Son is the antichrist. Every person who disowns the Son has no relationship with the Father. Every person acknowledging the Son also has a relationship with the Father. Stay with those truths you first heard and then you will abide in both the Father and the Son. The life everlasting is the promise He covenanted with us.” [NCMM Paraphrase]

103

The person who denies Jesus is the Christ: 1 John 4:3, “God is not the source of any ‘inspiration’ not confessing Jesus.” 2 John 7, “Many impostors left for the world. These are the impostors and antichrists: those who do not confess Jesus Christ came in the flesh.” The Gnostics were a sect that combined Egyptian, Greek, Jewish and Christian thought. They believe all matter and all flesh to be evil. Thus, it would be impossible for Jesus to have been manifest in the flesh unless it was as a phantasm or disembodied spirit.

Antichrist

Definition: Antichrist means against or instead of Christ. The term applies to all who deny what the Bible says about Jesus Christ, all who oppose his Kingdom, and all who mistreat his followers. It also includes individuals, organizations, and nations that falsely claim to represent Christ or that improperly ascribe to themselves the role of Messiah.

Does the Bible refer to only one antichrist?

1 John 2:18: “Young children, it is the last hour, and, just as you have heard that antichrist is coming, even now there have come to be many antichrists; from which fact we gain the knowledge that it is the last hour.”

2 John 7: “Many deceivers have gone forth into the world, persons not confessing Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.” (Notice that the “many antichrists” of 1 John 2:18 are here referred to collectively as “the antichrist.”)

Is the coming of the antichrist reserved for some future time?

1 John 4:3: “Every inspired expression that does not confess Jesus does not originate with God. Furthermore, this is the antichrist’s inspired expression which you have heard was coming, and now it is already in the world.” (That was written near the end of the first century C.E.)

1 John 2:18: “Even now there have come to be many antichrists; from which fact we gain the knowledge that it is the last hour.” (By “last hour” John evidently meant the end of the apostolic period. The other apostles had died, and John himself was very old.)

Some of those identified as antichrist—

Persons who deny that Jesus is truly the Messiah

1 John 2:22: “Who is the liar if it is not the one that denies that Jesus is the Christ [or, Messiah, anointed one]? This is the antichrist.”

All who deny that Jesus is the unique Son of God

1 John 2:22: “This is the antichrist, the one that denies the Father and the Son.”

Compare John 10:36; Luke 9:35.

Apostates

1 John 2:18, 19: “There have come to be many antichrists . . . They went out from us, but they were not of our sort.”

Those who oppose Christ’s true followers

John 15:20, 21: “If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you also . . . But they will do all these things against you on account of my name.”

Individuals and nations that oppose Christ as King or that themselves falsely claim the Messianic role

Ps. 2:2: “The kings of earth take their stand and high officials themselves have massed together as one against Jehovah and against his anointed one [Christ, or Messiah].”

See also Revelation 17:3, 12-14; 19:11-21.

Matt. 24:24: “False Christs and false prophets will arise and will give great signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, even the chosen ones.”
