                                                                          "know" Commentary

Might know thee - The word "know" here, as in other places, expresses more than a mere speculative acquaintance with the character and perfections of God. "It includes all the impressions on the mind and life which "a just view of God " and of the Saviour is fitted to produce." It includes, of course, love, reverence, obedience, honor, gratitude, supreme affection. "To know God as he is" is to know and regard him as a lawgiver, a sovereign, a parent, a friend. It is to yield the whole soul to him, and strive to obey his law. Barnes' Notes on the Bible

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory,

the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

This is the highest expression of love of which we can conceive. A parent who should give up his only son to die for others who are guilty

if this could or might be done - would show higher love than could be manifested in any other way. So it shows the depth of the love of God,

that he was willing to give his only Son into the hands of sinful men that he might be slain, and thus redeem them from eternal sorrow.

And the Word was made flesh –

The word "flesh," here, is evidently used to denote "human nature" or "man."

See Matthew 16:17; Matthew 19:5; Matthew 24:22; Luke 3:6; Romans 1:3; Romans 9:5.

The "Word" was made "man." This is commonly expressed by saying that he became "incarnate."

When we say that a being becomes "incarnate," we the pro -Nicene-Creeds
